Bog Wildlife

The Weeks Bay Pitcher Plant Bog teems with wildlife of the small variety. I’ve heard there are wild boars in the immediate vicinity but thankfully I have not seen one! This past week I was out there 3 times and upon first inspection there didn’t seem to be much going on. Stop to pay attention and the scene changes dramatically. As I mentioned in the first blog, I am anticipating the arrival of hundreds of butterflies now that a particular wildflower is starting to bloom. I got a few shots of some swallowtails but I’m hoping to get a lot more at closer range.

Dragonflies were around as well as lots and lots of spiders. Banana spiders are common and grow quite large. I’ve seen grown men completely undone by a harmless banana spider. Right now the large arachnids are everywhere hanging from trees and bushes and under houses and porches. But don’t worry! They are harmless and want to stay away from humans. Just watch where you are going and don’t run into their huge webs.

Those webs are the worst. Had to fight them to get to the bus stop every morning.

Sure would like one around here these days. I’ve got a friend in his thirties who is afraid of spiders something awful. Guess I’ll just have to make sure he sees the picture. :)

Great blog, interesting subject! I really enjoy photography and plant life.

Those banana spiders seem worse than the big northern California garden spiders. Much worse. What I dislike most is the web… It’s like springy thread!
